Washington Crossing

High School - 9/11 - America Before 1630

Timeline Events

1607 Jamestown was founded by the English
1619 Slavery was introduced to the colony of Virginia

1620 The Mayflower Compact was signed
1621 First Thanksgiving

1630 Puritans settle Massachusetts Bay

Think about it...
Why did the English establish a colony in Virginia?
What prompted the colony establishment called Plymouth?
Why was the Mayflower Compact important?
What were the differences in Pilgrims and Puritans?

Homework

1. Skim the list of men who signed the Mayflower Compact.  What kind of men were they? Do you think they were equipped to leave home and begin a new settlement? Read about the group of men on the ship. Makes notes about some of them. You don’t have to include each one but choose 2-3 men to highlight. (See Wikipedia – “Mayflower Signatories” - for a list of the men and brief description)

-OR- (or both if you're wildly motivated...and most of you are!)

Research Puritans and Pilgrims. Write about the differences in each group. If you had lived during that time, which group would you have identified with more?

2. Quote for this week: Write your thoughts about it...When was it said? What were the circumstances? etc.
"He that will not work shall not eat." - John Smith
What insight does that quote give you about the conditions in Jamestown? What was life like? You may write a narrative as if you are a settler at Jamestown or simply write about the conditions of the time.

3. Map - Label 13 colonies
